Offshore Energy – A New Pillar of the Polish Energy Sector

Renewable energy sources have the potential to play a much greater role in the Polish energy sector than they do today. However, to operate efficiently, they require large amounts of space that could otherwise be used for different purposes. This is exactly why offshore wind farms are such an excellent solution — they make it possible to benefit from the greatest advantages of renewable energy while minimizing its drawbacks. Fortunately, Poland recognized this potential years ago.

Currently, more and more wind farms are being developed in the Baltic Sea. Projmors, the largest and oldest company within ASE Technology Group, is involved in as many as 13 of these projects. The first of them will become operational within the next few years, and the energy they generate will provide significant support for the Polish energy system.

How Important Are Offshore Wind Farms?

The total capacity of the Baltic offshore wind farms in which Projmors participates will reach 5,939 MW. How significant is this amount of energy? Poland’s average electricity demand during the summer is approximately 22,500 MW. According to Polish Power Grids (PSE), the highest recorded demand reached 27,617 MW.

This means that under favorable conditions, offshore energy sources could cover more than 20% of the highest electricity demand ever recorded in Poland. At the same time, this amount of energy would exceed Poland’s electricity imports from neighboring countries by more than two times, even without subtracting exported energy. Expanding offshore wind energy on an even larger scale could not only help Poland become independent from imported electricity, but also provide a realistic path toward reducing the country’s dependence on coal-fired power generation.
